Biography

The Hon. James D. Otto is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Gray Davis in 2003. He ran successfully as the incumbent in the 2012 election and was re-elected for a new term.

Judge Otto graduated with distinction earning his B.A. from San Diego State University in 1971. He went on to earn his J.D. from Northwestern University, Chicago in 1974.

After graduating from law school, Otto joined the law firm of Cummins, White, and Breidenbach as an associate. He practiced with the firm, which would eventually become Cummins and White, LLP, for 27 years and was ultimately named a managing partner. In 2001 he became a founding partner for the law firm of Altman, Otto, and Kong, LLP. He remained with the firm until his appointment to the Superior Court in 2003.

During his time on the bench, Judge Otto has served as Assistant Supervising Judge as well as the Supervising Judge for the South District.

He has served on a variety of judicial committees and has been active with the Bar Association.
